Luckily, I know the difference between geothermal and solar energy collection…. Unluckily, I am far from an expert in either. I have seriously considered solar, and the cost is about the same. I came to the conclusion that there was quite a bit of speculation involved in arriving at a decision. And that speculation is: “Will gas and electricity prices just keep going up for the rest of my lifetime?” Hard one to answer, I realise.
I really didn’t believe what I was told about the payback period of having solar (or geothermal) energy. Funnily enough, the bloke trying to sell me some solar panels was very upbeat about the speed at which my seven grand would be paid back in reduced gas and leccy bills.
I DO know that geothermal requires quite a bit of land, in order to get enough collection area to make it viable… There must be some average area of land needed per room in your house. Yes, it does work, and once installed
it is pretty maintenance free. Like solar, I guess it is less productive during the colder months… when you need it more!
In the end, I decided (against the better judgement of the solar panel salesman) that it would be better to keep my money in the bank earning interest, and wait for solar energy to be more popular, the install cost to be lower, and the payback time shorter.

Solar panels are used fairly commonly here in Georgia. People are satisfied with them and they aren’t so expensive here so I’ve been told.
